Truly Beautiful - Sandra...


Our dear friend Sandra has been battling breast cancer in Vancouver, and our close friends Wade and Joanna (along with many others) organized a huge night to help fundraise for her and to celebrate her birthday.

Below is an email that Joanna sent thru to me, as well as a link to the CTV news coverage of the event! Check it out.

Sandra is amazing in so many ways, we share a god-child (Eleanor) with her, and for those of you who read my blog, she is the one that helped to teach me about cake decorating. She is truly beautiful and amazing at her work.

Thank you everyone for such an amazing evening last night. It was so much fun to see all of Sandra's friends celebrate with her.

It is my incredible honour and joy to let you know that at this point the gifts and pledges made to help Sandra total just over $12,300.00! WHOO HOO! This amount far surpasses all my expectations in what I thought we could do - thank you ALL so much!

The enthusiastic joy of giving was contagious and growing all night - a highlight being the auction for Wade's dreadlocks when the highest bid for the last dread reached $700! The dread auction raised $2845.00 in total.

Thanks again to all the hosts, sponsors and volunteers. Today is Sandra's real birthday. What a gift it was to me to deliver a box of money to her - not because she is so mad about money, (in fact, the opposite) but because I knew we were all giving her peace of mind as she enters the stage of her cancer treatment. Burstin' With Broadway!

I've joined an awesome choir called Burstin' with Broadway. It is so much fun cause it's open to anyone that wants to be a part of a choir for fun, and all the songs that we sing are Broadway type musicals. We only meet once a week, and throughout the week we have a CD to practice with (many of the choir members actually can't read music) But it's so amazing to see how excited everyone is to be a part of this choir and how surprised they are at themselves for what they have accomplished. Somedays it's surprises me to. In the photo you will see some of the compilations we are singing this season. We will soon be singing our pieces in some elite places like the local old folks home...and our final concert will be June 10/06, at a United church in North Vancouver. Click here for the website!

The Art of Making Mistakes

  I don't know if you have ever struggled with your "bits n pieces" of art being good enough for general public viewing.  I love to draw doodley art/tangles/words... mindlessly on bits of paper especially while watching TV or listening to music.  I would never classify it as "fine" art.  I do it to relax - and because I'm  trying to slow down, I'll often make errors in the process from impatience or distraction. They are far from perfect. Not poetically beautiful. Not necessarily powerful or inspirational.  And are littered with mistakes. A few weeks ago, I saw my talented son draw a beautiful picture and half way through, throw it in the bin.  I asked him why he would throw away such a beautiful piece of work and he grunted "too many mistakes" and then "Its not how I imagined it to look." Oh boy - did I relate!   We want to hide our mistakes or start over... forget that we were so stupid to make such a big blunder in the first place.
